Firewall Countersinking

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

I finished all the countersinking tonight on all the stiffeners and gussets. The hard wood jig I use to hold the part while using the microstop in the cordless drill is working great. I started to dimple the firewall, but after a few holes trying to holding the part and dimple by myself I thought better of it. I’ll get Annabelle to help out later this week.

Rud, R/LE: Leading Edge, Trimming

Monday, August 27th, 2007

–Continued to work on rudder leading edge
–Started trimming elevator stiffeners

I got the leading edges of the rudder clecoed– barely. They look ok. The creases aren’t very difficuly to see luckily. Also I relized I didn’t bend the edge of the skin where the 2 sides overlap. I don’t even have an edge bend tool yet. I sat the rudder aside to come back to and started working on the elevator stiffeners.

Rud: Priming, Riveting

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

–Primed stiffeners
–Riveted stiffeners to left skin

I used Tempo Zinc Chromate on the stiffeners because I couldn’t find any self-etch locally. I does not seem to adhere well at all compared with the 7220. It’s good enough for these stiffeners but I won’t be using it again.

The first few rivets for the left skin stiffeners were poorly driven because I couldn’t get the back rivet set to fit well against the stiffener flanges. I ground down the plastic on the back rivet set to get clearance against the stiffeners. After this the riveting work much better.
